‘Just the Facts, Ma'am’

I’m looking for Hard Data.   I’m trained to deal with facts, data (in fact, often too much data), tables, information…that’s my meat and gravy.   What do I have here?  Thinking about it, actually not much.   There’s lots of circumstantial, anecdotal  evidence,  but probably not enough to convict.

First there’s the elevator speech.  So how many people have you met in an elevator who are willing to listen to you?  Even if you count the people who are not confined in small space with you, how many would listen to your commercial without thinking you were a little odd.  Count them.   Do you have an actual number?   Does anyone have a number?  Not that I know of.

Next on the block – networking.  Actual numbers here?  Does a bigger network mean you are more likely to get a job?   Everyone has one good example, but percentages?  Pie charts? Graphs?

And then all the other advice:
·         Find the hiring manager and its counterpart - ignore HR.
·         To cover letter or not to cover letter
·         How to deal with recruiter (too many tips here to mention)
·         ….and the list goes on

Any numbers on these?
·         How many successful placements come from HR?   How many directly from the hiring manager?
·         How many of either of these read cover letters
·         How many by-pass the neophyte 20 year olds who are supposedly screening everyone?
·         How many jobs has your recruiter placed last year?
·         How many jobs does it take to keep a recruiter living for a year?
·         How many does it take to let him/her eat lobster every day and drive a Lexus?

No matter how hard you network, how many people you know, how many hiring managers you can contact,  the first thing you need to do is find THE JOB LISTING.   It’s inescapable.  (OK, there are some people who find jobs invented just for them;   they are few and far between.)

Back to the THE JOB LISTING.   Where?  The Job Boards.   (UGH!)    But there IS data here.   Probably too much, too vague, too specific, etc. – but it does exist.

But there’s something with prospects for a numbers person…
